When leaders and other people in the body of Christ in the church see people who are in out right sin, or "living in sin," and don't correct it, correction must take place. Or anything will be permissible. The leaders can not just look the other way, and not confront it. Again we are to bring correction, rebuke, and do it in love.
So watch yourselves. "If your brother sins, rebuke him, and if he repents, forgive him. If he sins against you seven times in a day, and seven times comes back to you and says, 'I repent, 'forgive him. ( Luke 17:3) Do not rebuke a mocker or he will hate you; rebuke a wise man and he will love you. (Prov. 9:8) Better is open rebuke than hidden love. (Prov. 27:5) Preach the Word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage- with great patience and careful instruction. For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths. But you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the duties of your ministry. ( 2 Tim. 4:2-5) Those who sin are to be rebuked publicly, so that the others may not take warning. I charge you, in the sight of God and Christ Jesus and the elect angels, to keep these instructions without partiality, and do nothing out of favoritism. Do not be hasty in the laying on of hands, and do not share in the sins of others. Keep yourself pure. ( 1 Tim. 5:20-22). All scripture is God -breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be throughly equipped for every good work. (1 Tim. 3:16-17). God says that those He loves He rebukes (Rev. 3:19).
I realize that this is a touchy subject for a lot of leaders in the churches and also for other Christians. But God is holding us accountable folks, especially those who are called to teach and preach the gospel. Sin is never acceptable to God. God cannot look on sin. Sin separates us from a loving God. That's why He gave us His Son Jesus Christ, so that we could come boldly to the Father. It took the shedding of Jesus Christ Blood that was shed on the cross, so that you and me could be forgiven, in right standing with God "declared righteous". We can not earn this righteousness, it is a free gift. And it is up to every human being to make that choice. And the way we live every day, our choices we make, we are accountable. We can't correct some sins, and then leave others alone, because we think that we will offend them, and that they will not come back to church. But, I will say this, we need to do it in love, and pray and ask the Holy Spirit to help us in it.
